A murder has been committed, and the most valuable clue is a gold-rimmed pince-nez (a type of eyeglasses without stems that are secured by pinching the nose) apparently dropped by the killer. Scotland Yard detective Stanley Hopkins returns as Sherlock's foil to contrast the common policeman's take on the mystery with Sherlock's own genius insight into the matter.
